John Buckner, MD
Dr. Buckner earned his BA in Biology and Medical Degree from the University Of Missouri Kansas City School Of Medicine in 1985. From 1985 – 1990, Dr. Buckner attended the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City, OK where he performed his internship and residency in general surgery. Dr. Buckner became a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and remains Board Certified in General and Vascular Surgery. In 1990, he began an active duty stint in the Air Force. Dr. Buckner was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska where he served for 3 years as a Major in the USAF. During this tour of duty, he deployed to Germany in support of Operation Desert Storm and also deployed to South Korea. Dr. Buckner earned the Expert Field Medical Badge (EFMB) while training with the 1st MASH at Ft Riley, Kansas. Upon his release from active duty in 1993, he received the Meritorious Service Medal. He then transferred to the Air Force Active Reserves.
Dr. Buckner returned to Springfield in 1993 and joined Ferrell Duncan Clinic. He has practiced all areas of general and vascular surgery since his return to Springfield, but has always concentrated his efforts on improving breast surgical care for the women of Southwest Missouri. He became the first surgeon in Springfield to perform a number of new procedures in the treatment of breast cancer and has been principle investigator in breast cancer research with the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group.
Dr. Buckner continued to serve in the Air Force Reserves until June of 2000 when he resigned his commission. The events of Sept. 11, 2001 compelled Dr. Buckner to once again serve his country and he signed up for the United States Army Reserves. During the past 10 years, Col Buckner has deployed 3 times to Iraq. The first, with the 1st Armored Division as a part of the 924thForward Surgical Team stationed in Baghdad, Iraq, during that first deployment Col Buckner was awarded the Combat Medics Badge for providing care to injured soldiers while under enemy fire. The second Deployment was with the 344th Combat Support Hospital at Camp Bucca, Iraq, and his third and final deployment to Iraq,he served with the 325th Combat Support Hospital in Tikrit, during the peak of the surge that secured Iraq and broke the back of the insurgency of Al Queda. Dr. Buckner’s last deployment was in 2010, when he served in support of Operation Enduring Freedom with the 101st Airborne. As a member of the 934th Forward Surgical Team, he was stationed at Forward Operating Base Sharana in Eastern Afghanistan.
Dr. Buckner has received the Meritorious Service Medal, 4 Army Commendation Medals, 2 Army Achievement Medals, Expert Field Medics Badge, National Defense Medal, Army Reserve Medal, Army Overseas Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, NATO Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the coveted, Combat Medics Badge for his service in Iraq and Afghanistan. Col Buckner is currently a member of the retired Reserves since November of 2013 after over 28 years or Active and Active Reserve Service to the Armed Forces.
Dr. Buckner was a Board Member of the Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks for over 10 years and is currently on the Board of Trustees of the BCFO. He was Medical Director of Surgical Services at Coxhealth for seven years and served as the Chief of Surgery at CoxHealth and is a long time member of the Executive Board of Ferrell Duncan Clinic. He is the Director of the Missouri Surgical Center for Breast Health and is a former member of the Missouri Board of Health. Dr. Buckner is a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Medical Consultants to the Armed Forces, Association of Military Surgeons of United States and Special Operations Medical Association, as well as, multiple other medical societies and organizations.
Dr. Buckner has been honored in the Springfield community with multiple awards including: The Red Cross Everyday Hero’s Award, Salute to HealthCare Award, and was honored and inducted as a member of the Springfield Public Schools Hall of Fame in 2011.
Dr. Buckner and his wife of 30 years, Rochelle, live in Springfield and have three children – John IV, Christina and Jake and daughter and son in laws, Chelsie Buckner and Trent Freeman, as well as, three grandchildren.
